Canvas Backpack: A camping essential

If you’re planning on taking a camping trip with friends or family anytime soon, or not soon, you’re going to want a canvas backpack. I just got back from a trip to Yellowstone, and let me know you was it spectacular. We had amazing weather, so I didn’t need to worry much about the things I packed, just left them in the car and didn’t think about them till we got back to it.

Every trip I take, I do my research into the weather for that location’s time of year, what I need to take, how long I’m going, etc, etc. I talk with other frequent campers and take note of any recommendations they might have. I thought that by now I’d make a list of all the must-have items and tools you’ll need for any camping trip you take.

1. Poncho
This one might be a given, but I can’t tell you how many times I or other campers I’ve met have left it behind. Weather can be so unpredictable, especially at campgrounds which tend to vary in size, height, etc, so a poncho should be at the top of your list every time with a spare always in your bag.

2. A pocket knife
Whether you’re cooking up dinner or you need to cut a knot, you are going to need a pocket knife. It’s not only a necessary essential for surviving in the wilderness, but it’s also a great means of protection. You can find a few of my favorites here:

3. Advanced bug spray
I’m not talking about the bug spray you spray during a Sunday afternoon baseball game. I’m talking deep woods bug spray. You never know what kind of creepy crawlers you might find where you’re located and it’s better to be safe than sorry, believe me. I definitely recommend getting one with anti tick, as those are very common in most areas.

4. Last but certainly not least, da da da dunnnn… a canvas backpack. This is the perfect thing to carry all of the above mentioned in, as each of these items should be taken with you during hikes and explorations. The reason I’d vote canvas over any other materials is that it’s lightweight and won’t make your back sweat like most other materials do. They also tend to have a ton of pockets at various sizes which is super helpful for fitting all your items. I’ve found a few that I really like and a few that I don’t really like, but here are my top picks:
